Pier's Sellars - An earthly perspective

To understand this through a different lens, let’s focus on the famous astronaut Piers Sellar’s perspective of Earth from space.

While he was sitting in the international space station, looking down at the earth and watching the great Amazon river pass between his feet, he noticed one peculiar thing: there were no visible borders between countries like there are in our geography textbooks in school.

In this moment he realized that the concept of separation and borders was simply a mental construct created by humans. It suggested to him that the human mind creates separation in a universe that is intricately interconnected.

Piers started to wonder who owned these countries with borders. This illusion of separation must then be closely followed by the illusion of ownership.

Honestly, who owns the earth? Who is it trillions in debt to? Who actually owns the land we live on? Who owns these countries or the resources that are readily available? Does the United States of America own the moon because they were the first to put a flag on it?

An ancient Indian Proverb speaks of overcoming the illusion of ownership.

“Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children.”

At the end of the day, the oldest living human culture sums it up quite well.

“We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love...and then we return home.” Australian Aboriginal proverb
