The Day I Couldn't Get Out of Bed: My SelfCare Revolution

Hey there,

Ever had one of those days where you just couldn't get out of bed? Not because you were lazy, but because your body and mind simply said, "Enough"?

I did. At 26, I was a successful physiotherapist. On paper, I had it all.

But my body knew better. My body had kept the Score.

All those seemingly unconscious choices over the past 12 months and even 5 years had compounded into a vessel that was on empty.. mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually and even biologically.

I'm sure you can relate to a moment like this in your life.

A dark night of the soul... A moment whether we question if we had pushed the limits too far... asking whether we would be able to get ourselves "back to normal".

In this moment. I couldn't even remember what normal felt like.

What did it feel like to wake up happy and excited about life?
What did it feel like to get out of bed and just go for a run without having an hour routine to just get my mind and body willing?
What did it feel like to wake up with energy and not be tired?

That day changed everything. It was the beginning of a journey I never expected to take.

Why is all of this important to me?

You see, I grew up with a single mom who worked tirelessly to give my brother and me every opportunity. She taught me the value of hard work, but also the importance of compassion and empathy. I saw firsthand the toll that relentless striving can take on a person. Carers, needing care, but having no other choice than to keep going.

Then, there was my dad. He was a talented artist, but he struggled with mental health issues. I watched him fall through the cracks of a system that wasn't designed to support him.

These experiences shaped my passion for helping others. I became a physiotherapist, driven by a desire to heal and empower. But I was so focused on helping others that I forgot to take care of myself.

Difference between being a nice person and a good one

I was the ultimate "good person - good heart, good intent", couldn't hurt a fly, ultimately a "people pleaser" in a broken system. I was a statistic of the very thing I was trying to change.

One dreary winter morning, I woke up in a state of complete burnout. I couldn't even get out of bed. It was a wake-up call.

That's when I started asking the right questions. Here are 18 question prompts for those that are curious be real with themselves too. The man or woman in the mirror moment.

I traveled the world, exploring ancient wisdom and cutting-edge science. I wore elephant pants in Bali, danced ecstatically, and sat in silence for days. I learned about the power of nature, the importance of connection, and the transformative power of the mind.

I found harmony in nature, stillness and breath.

I was called to bring some powerful plants into my life, grand mother Aya. I was seeking for the answers in the branches of the trees of life, only to be reminded that they are found in the roots.

She reminded me that love is the answer. She asked me if I was choosing love or fear? The answers had always been within. Everything was just guiding me home to myself.

I realized that true health wasn't about fixing what was broken, but nourishing what was whole. Celebrating, supporting and nourishing what we want more of in life, rather than fighting the energy we don't want in our lives.

SelfCare is an endless journey of mastering ourselves

This realization became the foundation of my SelfCare philosophy. It's not about quick fixes, silver bullets, gurus or fad diets. It's about a whole-istic approach to well-being that addresses every aspect of your being. It's personalized, it's inside out. It's me vs me. Supported by the collective "we".

I realized that I didn't get here alone.

I was never meant to do it alone

I reflected for a minute.

"It took a community to raise me as a child" reflecting on my mum, the local community, every teacher and friend that had been there to support my growth
"It takes a community to heal the sick" reflecting on the medical system I worked in. At times we would have a brains trust of 10 or more people in service of one persons health and wellbeing. Working on every level to make sure they left the hospital one day.
"It takes connection to live towards longevity together".

I reflected on the balinese philosophy of "Tri Hita Karana".

A place that called me home without knowing why. This philosophy evolved what connection meant to me.. It wasn't just a connection to ourselves and others, it was a connection to nature and energetically to "spirit", living its essence and energy in every action. Karma wasn't just a nice word, it was a way of living in harmony with the world around us.

Dissolving the illusion of separation between this and that, me and them was just the beginning.

I imagined a child standing on the moon looking down at the earth. What would they see? They wouldn't see borders, flags, races, religions or any other mental construct that we as humans created in past centuries and millennia. Just a big blue planet, symbiotically living as one macro-biome. Together.

I wrote the SelfCare book to share what I learned.

It's a roadmap to a life of vibrant health, unshakeable confidence, and limitless energy. Health from within, happiness from within and connection to all that is and has ever been.
